Predicting spectral features in galaxy spectra from broad-band photometry

چکیده
We explore the prospects of predicting emission line features present in galaxy spectra given broad-band photometry alone. There is a general consent that colours, and spectral features, most notably the 4000 Å break, can predict many properties of galaxies, including star formation rates and hence they could infer some of the line properties. We argue that these techniques have great prospects in helping us understand line emission in extragalactic objects and might speed up future galaxy redshift surveys if they are to target emission line objects only. We use two independent methods, Artifical Neural Neworks (based on the ANNz code) and Locally Weighted Regression (LWR), to retrieve correlations present in the colour Ndimensional space and to predict the equivalent widths present in the corresponding spectra. We also investigate how well it is possible to separate galaxies with and without lines from broad band photometry only. We find, unsurprisingly, that recombination lines can be well predicted by galaxy colours. However, among collisional lines some can and some cannot be predicted well from galaxy colours alone, without any further redshift information. We also use our techniques to estimate how much information contained in spectral diagnostic diagrams can be recovered from broad-band photometry alone. We find that it is possible to classify AGN and star formation objects relatively well using colours only. We suggest that this technique could be used to considerably improve redshift surveys such as the upcoming FMOS survey and the planned WFMOS survey.

The Host Galaxy of GRB 990712 ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆
We present a comprehensive study of the z = 0.43 host galaxy of GRB 990712, involving ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and HST imaging. The broad-band UBVRIJHKs photometry is used to determine the global spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy. Comparison with that of known galaxy types shows that the host is similar to a moderately reddened starburst galaxy with a young ste...
متن کاملThe Multiband Photometry of the GRB Host Galaxies
We present photometric multiband spectral energy distributions for the GRB host galaxies: GRB 971214, GRB 970508, GRB 980613, GRB 980703 and GRB 990123 obtained with the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. Using SEDs for the starburst galaxies, we made estimates of K-correction values and estimated the absolute magnitudes of the GRB host galaxies within the range of cosmological parameters. The compariso...

We investigate the intrinsic opacity of high-redshift galaxies to outgoing ionising photons using high-quality photometry of a sample of 27 spectroscopically-identified galaxies of redshift 1.9 < z < 3.5 in the Hubble Deep Field. Our measurement is based on maximum-likelihood fitting of model galaxy spectral energy distributions— including the effects of intrinsic Lyman-limit absorption and ran...
متن کاملOn the colour-colour properties of the Extremely Red Objects
The colours of the galaxy class known as Extremely Red Objects (EROs; R− K > 5) are considered to be consistent with two distinct galaxy populations at high redshift: evolved ellipticals or young dusty starbursts. In this paper the properties of EROs, spanned by the five photometric bands RIJHK, are investigated as to the possibility to distinguish between these two galaxy populations using onl...
متن کاملFast Radiative Shocks in Dense Media. III. Properties of the Emission
Evolution of fast, radiative shocks in high density medium is presented. Ionizing spectra and approximate broad band light curves of the shocked gas are calculated. Emergent shock spectra, as seen by a distant observer, are obtained from photoionization models. The emergent spectra have a power-law shape Fν ∝ ν −α with mean spectral index α ∼ 0.6 − 1.0 in the energy range 0.01 − 10 keV, and hav...
